The GSAPP Story of Second Chances

In the heart of Sierra County, learning, growth, and education look different for everyone. Life can take unexpected turns, and for many students, the traditional path to graduation is not always the one that fits best.

That is where GSAPP began.

The Geronimo Springs Alternative Pathway Program was created to offer a different kind of opportunity, one built around flexibility, support, and the belief that education should meet people where they are.

Whether students are returning to complete unfinished goals, balancing work and family, or looking for a new start, GSAPP creates pathways that make success possible.

GSAPP is more than a place to earn a credential. It is a space where students rebuild confidence, gain practical skills, and prepare for what comes next, whether that means entering the workforce, continuing education, or reaching personal goals that once felt out of reach.

In our rural community, opportunity matters. Access matters. Having a place that believes in second chances and new beginnings matters. GSAPP exists to make sure every student has the support to continue their story, no matter where their journey begins.

Serving students ages 16+, GSAPP offers multiple routes toward earning a diploma or equivalency, including HiSET, GED, and NEDP.

Each pathway recognizes that learning is not one-size-fits-all, and that progress can happen in many ways. Some students thrive through testing, others through applied learning and life-based skill demonstration, but every path leads toward growth.

GSAPP’S Pathway Program Options:

  • High School Equivalency Testing is a program where individual students take and pass five pre-tests in each of the five subjects: Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Once all five pre-tests are passed, the program will assign final testing vouchers for the students to sit online proctored or in-person final exams. Exams can be digital for online proctored or written exams for in-person. Once all five exams have been passed with a minimum of 8 out of 20 points possible, and the student's accumulated credits are greater than 45 total, that student will receive a high school equivalency diploma from the NM Department of Higher Education, dated with the same date as the last final exam was completed and passed.

  • The General Education Development (GED) Program is available through GSAPP. There are slight differences between GED and HiSET. GED testing requires only 4 exams in order to receive a diploma in each of the following subjects: Language Arts Comprehension (Reading/writing combined), Math, Science, & Social Studies. GED exams are normally in person, with students traveling to Las Cruces, Albuquerque, or Silver City as the closest testing centers to Truth or Consequences. It is possible to take online proctored GED exams through the GSAPP program locally; however, each student would need to complete the Official GED Ready Practice Exams online before being allowed to book online proctored exams. Students who have been out of school for more than 5 years have suggested that the GED exams, primarily the Math exam, are slightly easier than the HiSET, but that is just an opinion, and it is not fact-based. All of the exams given are free for students if enrolled in GSAPP. (Normally they are $40 each exam)

  • The National External Diploma Program is also offered through GSAPP and the NM Department of Higher Education. This program is designed for students who have been out of school for more than 10 years, or students with severe test anxiety, or other barriers to traditional test-based approaches. The NEDP is proctored and administered through the NM Department of Higher Education. In this program, students must pass a pre-test in both language arts and math. The math portion primarily covers measurements, probability, numerical placement, and fractions. Algebra is limited for this exam, though a basic understanding is helpful. Once a student has passed the pre-tests, they will enter into a module-based program and work alongside their NEDP administrator to complete the program. Completion of all 12 modules can take anywhere from 4 months to 10 months. The NEDP Program is currently testing a pilot program and is seeking students for evaluation and response of the new program.
